Costume Design for Seven Acts of Mercy.

Anders Lustgarten’s play confronts the dangerous necessity of compassion in a world where it is in short supply. And it is all about contrasts and aggression. About class and running away from who you are, about pretending

It is set in 1600s Naples and modern day Liverpool. It was necessary for my design scheme that Naples characters are dressed in 1970’s clothing (time when one of the main characters from Liverpool was young).

Bare feet and shaved head are metaphors for equality and rebellion. Red (Naples) is colour of power and wealth, Liverpool characters – lowest social classes are wearing grey/white/black clothing.
